    1. QUARTZ - Lucid EP

      Wild post-d&b from Cardiff music producer Quartz, whose music speaks for itself: in Elliot Garvey, we find an artist rightly hesitant to involve himself in the gaudy blare of online releasing. What is lost in the way of covetous imitativeness, which goes all too commonly with the territory of attempting to maintain an online presence, is made up for with a raw, unversed and entirely original sound, which builds on the tempos and harshnesses of drum & bass while otherwise upending its banalities. 'Russian Roulette' and 'Lucid' hardly care to qualify as d&b tracks proper, more than they do to simply compel the raver to shake uncontrollably, with their gatling percs and no-man's textures. 'Do It', meanwhile, contrasts the A-side's intuit-iators with an intelligent chopper-upper, working rattling and languid voices around a mercenary mix. This is the exception; 'Runtime' returns to the primeval sixteenths and flareup Reese textures that define this wicked EP. Learn More

In 1999, armed with a basic setup featuring an Atari, Akai MPC 2000, Yamaha DX, and Korg 770, he ventured into music production.       Makin' Moves kicks off 2025 with a scorching four-track EP from Detroit’s Javonntte, a producer whose deep connection to the city’s dynamic music scene can be felt in every beat. A veteran of the early ‘90s house movement, Javonntte refined his skills alongside iconic figures like Blake Baxter and Amp Fiddler, and this experience shines through in the richness and variety of this release. It was well-loved by aficionados upon its original release in 1997, though it didn’t achieve the broader recognition it deserved at the time. Since then, it’s been hard to find on vinyl—unless you're willing to pay the inflated prices online. That's why this licensed reissue from ChiWax is a welcome treat. In Neutral is still widely regarded as Gemini's finest work, blending pounding, hypnotic Detroit techno-inspired deep house tracks with some deeper, jazz-infused downtempo moments (such as "Ahi").       Space Drum Meditation is back with a reissue of Four Tusks, a 12-track odyssey of dreaded sonics and trepidatious treks through augmented wildernesses. Their debut album and seventh reissue on the eponymous label, the duo of Eddie Ness and Liem were once fixtures of the house musical landscape at large, yet only with SDM did they turn their hands to demurer experimental soundscapes, informed by the "tribal" gloom and etherics of an electro-auxed rainforest. Throughout Four Tusks, we hear the sleeker, pantherine side of their catalogue, with ritualistic drumming heard well-melded into many a grim, cowled and rattling texture, all glued by the faint but here still oppressive sound of rain, not to mention vapour steaming off the megaphylls.       Private press disco/boogie specialist and all-round font of all record knowledge The Mighty Zaf returns to Moton for the first time since 2016, bringing with him a trio of re-edits made in tribute to the late, great Phil Asher. Check first A-side 'Things Could Be', a gorgeous, life-affirming and effortlessly soulful tweak of a loved-up slab of Philadelphia International style early disco, before admiring the more down-low vibes of 'Connect Here', where incessant male vocal improvisations, cut-glass strings and twinkling instrumental solos catch the ear.     1. DUB SYNDICATE - Strike The Balance (reissue)

      Strike the Balance is another standout Dub Syndicate set featuring vocal contributions from reggae legend Bim Sherman on a cover of Lloyd & Devon's 'Cuss Cuss' and Shara Nelson, whose work with Massive Attack on Blue Lines was soon to make her a household name, but here offers her rendition of Serge Gainsbourg's 'Je T'aime.' Released in 1989, this album marked a significant moment in the evolution of Dub Syndicate and coincided with the group's emergence as a touring unit.       Probably the best known Dub Syndicate album, this 1991 set features vocals from Skip McDonald and Akabu, samples of the late, great Prince Far I, and keyboards from Public Image Limited’s Keith Levene.
